This year’s Louis Auchincloss Prize goes to…. (drumroll) ....Wynton Marsalis! We had a great time covering this fantastic night for the Museum of the City of New York. The annual award is presented to writers and artists whose work is inspired by and enhances the five boroughs of New York City. Past recipients include composer Philip Glass, composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and Lynne Meadow, artistic director of the Manhattan Theater Club.
A New Yorker since his student days at Juilliard, Wynton Marsalis is a prolific composer, educator, co-founder of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and a recipient of the National Medal of the Arts. Watch the video below to see highlights from the ceremony, featuring a special performance by the Essentially Ellington jazz band!
